City village

Today's generation misses out on a lot of values and traditions. With more and more people moving to the urban centres, they get cut off from the culture of the villages.

Pothys, one of the leading textile showrooms in Tamil Nadu, tries to bring back the magic of this culture during the summer season. The 'April-May Dhool' festival that has been going on in the shop has attracted many people not just for a discount sale but for the other activities that go on on its various floors.

Last year also Pothys, located at central Panagal Park in Chennai, celebrated April-May Dhool. The theme for this year is 'Manvasanai'.

If you can manage to get into the shop, consider yourself lucky. And once inside, you can be sure you will come out only after one hour. You will not be spending this one hour in buying anything, but simply gaping at the various activities that have been arranged at the shop.

The shop brings a village alive in front of our eyes. This type of marketing has been welcomed by Chennaivasis. The showroom has two big 35 feet Azhi dolls welcoming visitors - set up almost on the pavement. The special attractions inside include the traditional dances of Tamil Nadu like the wooden horse (poikkal gudhirai) and Peacock dance.

Even while you can have a peep into the bioscope you can get a computer horoscope or indulge in some computer palmistry. There is also a lucky dip contest and games with rewards.

Pothys management also provides drinks to cool the customers' body and good hospitality to soothe their souls. This has been the secret of their repeat customers and has helped their business growth.

Children also have entertainment like making a jigsaw puzzle of their favourite cine star Rajinikant, Vijaykanth or master blaster Sachin Tendulkar.

People can have a look of how their sarees are made from a weave that has been set up on the left hand side of the entrance.

There is also a potter sitting there and making his wares explaining the 'art' to the curious.

There is a magic show that attracts children and adults. There is also an artist who draws your caricature in just 10 minutes.

As a special treat to women, there is a specialist applying mehandi for them and they are given the usual gifts of flowers and bangles.
