A popular folklore on Brihaspathi

The legend that depicts the influence of the worship of Guru goes as follows, and is narrated whenever a worship or offering is made to the deity.

There was a certain king who had seven sons, all married to appropriate noble women. Two Brahmins used to visit the palace for alms, but were turned back empty-handed by the daughters-in-law. The displeasure of Guru affected adversely the prosperity of the kingdom. The kingdom was devastated by war and famine. The princes were in the battlefield in an alien country. The youngest daughter-in-law realised the unfortunate situation, sought forgiveness from the Brahmins and started giving them alms but still the elder six denied alms to the Brahmins. The youngest wife asked the Brahmin the remedy for getting over the bad days.

The Brahmins advised to keep a fast for Guru and to feed the Brahmins. Since her husband has gone to an alien country, she was advised to make two human figures behind the door; which would result in early safe return of the husband. Also she was asked to keep these figurines in a box as her family was stricken with poverty. The youngest daughter-in-law observed the rituals religiously.

It so happened that the princes lost in the war and were leading a nomadic life. The ruling king of that country died without any heir. As per the prevalent customs and traditions of that country, to find a suitable successor, a garland was hung on the horn of a royal elephant. Whosoever is garlanded by the royal elephant will be crowned to be the king .

The royal elephant went all around and ultimately put the garland round the youngest son's neck. He became the king. He searched for his brothers, but in vain. Once he constructed a huge water reservoirs for public welfare, which required the services of hundreds of labourers. Hundreds of labourers were engaged and amongst them were the brothers of the new king.

He identified them and took them to his palace and all started living peacefully with their wives. The worship and alms by the youngest daughter-in-law brought prosperity back to the family. Thus worship of Guru will yield prosperity in abundance.
