Sudar's Epic Movie 'Sangamithra' Gets Prestigious Status at Cannes Film Festival

Chennai, May 18: Director Sundar C's magnum opus 'Sangamithra' was launched at Cannes Film Festival 2017. Actors Jayam Ravi, Arya and Shruti Haasan have been roped in to play the titular characters Sangamithra, which is being produced by Sri Thenandal Films. AR Rahman is taking care of sounds and National Award-winning production designer Sabu Cyril on board for big sets.


The film officially launched at the Marche du Film's opening night in Cannes and team unveild the first look poster.  The poster of this Shruti Haasan and Jayam Ravi starrer film is listed on the cover page of the Cannes magazine. It is a rare thing that an Indian film’s first look or a teaser being unveiled at The Cannes, and Sangamithra has this distinct milestone now.

This epic story is set in the 8th century AD, Sangamithra, is a heartfelt tale of the trials and tribulations of Sangamithra and her journey to save her kingdom. As an ode to one of the oldest languages in the world, the film is set to explore uncharted chapters in ancient Tamil history. The feature film will be split into two parts and is currently in preproduction, with principal photography set to commence later this summer.

“The Indian box office is on the rise and we are looking forward to introducing Sangamithra to the international market, and cementing our existing strengths in building new industry relationships in Cannes," said Thenandal's Hema Rukmani. "This film marks our 101st production, and we could not be more thrilled to be introducing it in Cannes with cast and crew in town to support.”

Added Sundar C.: “It’s a great privilege to be introducing Sangamithra on the world stage at this year’s Marche du Film opening night. We have a dream cast in Jayam Ravi, Arya and Shruti Haasan and are looking forward to heading into production on the film this summer.”
