April 18: Liquor baron Vijay Mallya, wanted in India for defaulting on bank loans, has been arrested here, informed sources said on Tuesday.
Mallya was taken into custody by Scotland Yard and could be extradited to India, the sources said. Mallya will reportedly be taken to the Westminster Court shortly.
It is now upto the court to decide whether Vijay Mallya will be sent back to India to face trial.
British authorities have informed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) about the arrest, the sources said.
Mallya fled to Britain in March 2016 after being pursued in courts by banks seeking to recover about Rs 9,000 crore owed by his Kingfisher Airline. Despite multiple injunctions, he has failed to appear before investigators at the Enforcement Directorate in connection with a probe under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).
