It
was indeed a striking show. The sheer variety that Sanjay
Subrahmanyam served made his concert for Brahma Gana Sabha on
December 13, 2007, refreshingly different. Sanjay provided the
capacity audience with several outstanding listening moments with
his remarkable rendering.
Sivagami Petachi Auditorium was brimming with rasikas as we
reached the venue. Sanjay straightaway looked involved. He did an
impressive alapana in Pantuvarali, with his absorbing voice.
Tyagaraja kriti 'Shiva Shiva Ennarada' followed the alapana. It is a
popular kriti. Sanjay did a neraval with 'Agama Mula Nutiyinci' with
a few gamakas that were simply brilliant. The swaraprastharas
employed by him marked class. Inside a few initial moments, rasikas
sort of settled down anticipating to enjoy the evening thoroughly.
Evergreen Sahana proved a good appetiser for the discerning
audience. Tyagaraja kriti 'Emanadiccevo' was a fine rendition.
Sanjay’s choice of this kriti came as a surprise. For, this has been
a rare piece in concert circles. But, the senior vocalist made it a
delightful one to listen to.
Sanjay made the lustrous Saveri a lot more radiant with his
impeccable voice. A Swathi Tirunal kriti - 'Devi Pavane' – sprinkled
with some inspiring lyrics - was presented exquisitely by Sanjay.
The neraval line 'Soma Bimba Matahara Sumuki Bhakta Janakila' was a
good choice. And, Sanjay brought vibrancy to neraval-singing by
weaving innovative swara formations.
A
Vedanayakam Pillai composition, 'Innum Tamadamen', in raga Lalitha,
was delivered with vigour. The evening concert reached a crescendo
as Sanjay went into manodharma sangeetham.
It was an exciting 'Suddha Dhanyasi' alapana. Sanjay’s command
over the matter and control over his voice were out in full measure.
The tanam singing saw him firmly mark his stamp. The pallavi line
“Lakshmi Narayananai Bhajipom Avan Namaththai Ninaipom” was cleverly
crafted. He presented the pallavi in ragas such as Behag, Kanada,
Kamboji, Begada and Sindhubhairavi. The audience relished every bit
of his pallavi-singing. As he transited from one raga to another,
the audience was excited to identify the raga. It was a good
learning experience and served as an IQ test for everyone.
Even as he brought the evening concert to a close with a
Tirupugazh in Jonpuri, he did not show any sign of fatigue. And, his
commitment was just the same as when he began the kutcheri three
hours ago.
Violinist M R Gopinath matched Sanjay’s creativity with quite an
efficiency, which saw the audience approving with liberal applause.
Mrindangist Satish Kumar and Srirangam Kannan on morsing measured
up to Sanjay's standard and elicited “sabash” from the connoisseurs.
