Young star Sikkil Gurucharan performed a
scintillating concert at Bharat Kalachar on December 7, 2007.
The
PSBB school auditorium was packed from the beginning of the concert
till the end except a few who were busy visiting the canteen at
regular intervals. It was a distracting factor for the other
category of audience.
Overshadowing such distractions, Gurucharan was
brimming with energy and creativity.
The curtain-raiser for the concert was a Tamil
Varnam in the raga Sri Ranjani followed by Ganapathe Mahamathe in
the raga Kalyani decorated with brisk neraval and Sarvalaghu swaras.
After ‘Unathu Tiruvadi’ in Sarasangi, Gurucharan
rendered a structured Sri Kantimatim in Hemavati as a main piece
with embellished neraval and swaram in ‘Parasurama Nata Himasaila
Sutam’. Both the ragas were elaborately essayed and he constantly
attempted to reach out to the audience.
Violinist V V S Murari’s adherence to perfection
and aesthetic approach reflected in his raga playing. Followed by a
well-planned tani avartanam by J Vaidyanathan and Vaikkom
Gopalakrishnan, the concert concluded with a Tiruppavai and a Surdas
bhajan. Able contribution of the entire team holds credit for the
success of the concert.
Musicians who accompanied him efficiently were V
V S Murari on the violin, J Vaidyanathan on the mridangam and
Vaikkom Gopalakrishnan on the ghatam.
The vocalist’s powerful voice enabled confidence
in presentation and appealed to the listeners; the violinist’s
techniques were evident through his control over the instrument, and
accompaniment.
J Vaidyanathan’s gentle and spontaneous approach
in following the songs and accompanying the main artiste is worth
mentioning.
