The title of Tamil Isai Perarignar was conferred on Bombay Sisters, C Saroja and C Lalitha, at the inauguration of the Tamil Isai Sangam's 64th Annual Music Festival at the Raja Annamalai Manram auditorium in Chennai on December 21, 2006.
The Governor of Uttar Pradesh, T V Rajeshar, conferring the titles on the Carnatic vocalists, said various organisations should come forward to encourage and foster Tamil music, tradition and culture. He pointed out that Tamil music had a rich tradition and urged the people and the mass media to support such classical music rather than film songs.
He presented the awardees a medallion, the citation and Rs 10,000 cash donated by Lakshmi Achi, daughter of Raja Annamalai
Chettiar.
The president of the Tamil Isai Sangam, Justice P R Gokulakrishnan, welcomed the gathering. The citation was read out by Thiruppampuram S Shanmughasundaram. Earlier, the traditional lamp was lighted by Devaki
Muthiah.
Justice A R Lakshmanan, judge of the Supreme Court, and vice-president of the sangam, felicitated the awardees and said the sangam's activities had led to renewed interest in Tamil music.
The honorary secretary of the sangam, A C Muthiah, said the festival would be on till January 1, 2007.
The Bombay Sisters replied suitably to the felicitation, and congratulated the Tamil Isai Sangam for its efforts to promote Tamil music.
