A.Kanyakumari and her disciple Nishant Chandran enthralled the audience at the 32ft Anjaneyar temple, Nanganallur, in the music series. Their opening song ‘Mahaganapathim’ in Nattai was followed by one of Tyagaraja’s Pancharatna
Kritis.
Though ‘Thudukukala’ in Gowlai was a copybook exposition yet it was exemplary. Her heart-melting alapana of Mohanakalyani reflects her vidwat. The kriti ‘Bhuvaneswarrya’ by Harikesanallur Muthiah Bhagavathar was a mine of melody. It made us visualise the Goddess in all Her glory.
Swati Thirunal’s immortal classic ‘Bhavayami Raghuramam’, a ragamalika. was outstanding. The audience had a trip down memory lane while listening to this song which was made popular by the legendary M S
Subbalakshmi.
Guru and sishya played with depth Tyagaraja’s composition ‘Nannuvidachi’ in Reethigowlai. After a brief alapana, the kriti was embellished with kalpana
swaras.
The main piece in Dwajavanthi, ‘Akilandeshwari’, brightened the concert. The duo’s rendition of ‘Maye’ in the raga ‘Tharangini’ made the audience sing along with them.
Patri Satish Kumar, the mridangist, knew the pulse of the violinists and turned out to be a perfect foil. Vaikkom Gopalakrishnan on the ghatam boosted the concert with his inimitable style. Their tani had all the elements of a good percussive interlude.
