Shankar Mahadevan revels

Album 'Nine' by the Shankar Mahadevan-Javed Akhtar duo has everything that a music lover would relish. The nine songs of Javed Akhtar revolve around nine moods like love, sorrow, ecstasy, even fear and jealousy.

Each song in this album brought out by Saregama is a gem, delectably composed by Shankar Mahadevan himself. No Ehsaan and Loy? "No, this time I have done the music myself, but Ehsaan and Loy have contributed in terms of accompaniment in the BG score", says Shankar.

"It was very tough doing this album particularly when it came to bringing out feelings like fear and jealousy. I mean, that is not easy to show in a song. Fear doesn't mean creating eerie sounds. It's deeper than that. Anyway, I've tried my best. Am glad people who heard the album, have liked it", he added.

Shankar, in fact, got to release the album twice in one day at different locations. The first was at Music World when an army of fans stormed the place for his autographs and demanded a few songs from him too.

With a smile, Shankar set about signing autographs and began an informal singing session. What is more, he got the audience to sing with him. The voices got louder as he switched over to Tamil numbers, particularly Thaniye, Thannanthaniye from Rhythm and Uppu Karuvadu from Mudhalvan.

The cassette was released in the presence of Chemmal Manian, Regional Marketing Manager of Saregama.

In the evening, Shankar Mahadevan regaled a packed gathering at a function organised by the Sivasamy Memorial Charitable Trust with fusion music. His band, 'Silk' treated the audience to some spell-binding mix of Hindustani, Carnatic, Western and folk music.

For good measure, the album 'Nine' had another gala release in the presence of singers Sujatha, P Unnikrishnan, actress Revathi, cricketer Krishnamachari Srikkanth, Transworld group chairman S Ramesh and JMD S Mahesh.

Shankar was accompanied by Louis Banks (keyboard), Keith Fletcher (bass guitar), Taufiq Qureshi (percussion) and Sridhar Parthasarathy (mridangam). Drummer Muralikrishnan too joined in the fun and frolic during Uppu Karuvadu from Mudhalvan.

Endowed with a rich and vibrant voice, Shankar moved from lower octave to higher octaves with the ease of a trapeze artiste. He also displayed total command over all forms of music, classical, film and folk, in an energetic style. Needless to say, his ever-popular Breathless number proved to be an apt climax. Truly, he is in a class of his own.
