Aaha Ethanai Azhagu
Director: Kanmani
Cast: Mithun, Charmi, Bhavana, Ranjitha, Nasser, Pyramid Natarajan,
Karunas.
The film opens with the heroine standing on the terrace of a high-rise building, her back to the camera. As the camera moves up and closes in on her, she turns towards it with a toss of her long silky hair-shampoo-ad style, the favourite shot of film-makers to introduce their heroines. Somehow, the title doesn' t come to mind then!
Cut to the hero in a couple of street-side dance numbers, and then a tiff with his brother. Move on to the train sequence where the hero-heroine first meet. A book she's reading covers her face, and then he gets a glimpse of it, and is instantly smitten by her beauty, the title song's refrain in the background. But somehow again, one doesn't catch the relevance of the title!
It's lush, beautiful Ooty, where the duo have their various encounters, fall in love, and return home. Then it's parental opposition, elopement, and the near fatal accident. Incidentally the duo share the same birth-dates, have same likes and tastes, and now share their same state of amnesia too. His scheming brother, happy at the memory loss, tries to push him into a marriage with his business partner's daughter. Whether the families succeed in getting them married elsewhere forms the rest.
With two films behind him, Mithun has groomed himself into promising hero material, good in the dances and fights, and the lighter, mischievous scenes. While Pyramid Natarajan brings in a lot of spontaneity to his role of the girl's father, Ranjitha is clearly wasted as the hero's 'Anni'. The producer seems to have cut corners where the dresses of second lead Bhavana is concerned, her costumes leaving hardly anything to the imagination.
It's a fairly average entertainer, but what is commendable is that the director does not waste much time in moving the story forward, by too many of those 'accidental encounter' type of scenes. He keeps the pace going, removing each hurdle as it crops up in the story, and moves to the climax briskly. In fact, even making the return-of-memory a bit of a sudden affair! Vidyasagar has produced some good numbers including the title song, melodiously rendered by
Srinivas.
