Director: Vikraman
Cast: Surya, Laila, Sneha, Ramji, Ramesh Khanna, Charlie, Thalaivasal Vijay
It is a love triangle with the Vikraman touch. Surya, due to financial circumstances, is forced to work as a receptionist in a lodge that his family owned once. Radha, the new manager's daughter, (Sneha) falls in love with him and helps him out in many ways. She learns of his past love affair with Nirmala (Laila), of his helping out her family through their financial problems, their ingratitude and betrayal, when they discard him for his more wealthy friend Selva who had appeared on the scene. Radha plans to set Surya's life right, but Nirmala re-enters Surya's life. Betrayed by the man they trusted, Nirmala's family is once again in dire financial straits. Surya yet again helps the family get back on their feet, and supports Nirmala to achieve her aim of becoming a doctor. Before she leaves for her new job, Nirmala is persuaded by her now chastened family, to propose to Surya. And Surya has to make up his mind between the two women.
The director handles human relationships in his films with a natural sensitivity, and the endings to his stories too is usually different and thought provoking. Here too Vikraman's touch is felt, but just in a few scenes, like the interaction scenes between Surya and Nirmala, and Surya and Radha. The ending too is commendably different (not that difficult to predict for those who've seen the director's earlier films), but the long hackneyed dialogue the hero is made to mouth in the final scene to support his stand, mars the effect. Further, the comic capers of nearly a dozen comedy artistes in the film falls flat, except for the couple of scenes between Pandu and Chitra
Lakshmanan.
The director's knack of getting his artistes to perform better than they have done in their earlier films work here. There is a lot of maturity in Surya's performance, the actor revealing his ability to portray various expressions and emotions with ease. Laila is the timid coy one, Sneha the more vivacious. Vikraman has for the first time replaced his lucky mascot music director S.A.Rajkumar with Sirpi. Bu this new combination has not succeeded in creating the same magic as the earlier one did.
