Sri Rajarajeswari

Director: Bharati Kannan
Cast: Ramki, Ramya Krishnan, Sanghavi, Vadivelu, Nizhalgal Ravi, Thyagu, Bhanupriya, Nalini.

A newlywed tribal couple Raja and Rajeswari are killed brutally by three wealthy men who come to the hill-station for a vacation and all because Rajeswari had tried to resist the sexual advances of these men. She vows to take revenge, in some future birth. The story shifts to a couple of decades later where Rajeswari is re-born to a poor couple, and Raja is born to one of the villains. Rajeswari remembers her past birth and her vendetta, but Raja doesn't. Raja falls for Rajeswari, but gives up when he learns that she is not all that interested. He marries Meenakshi (Sanghavi). The rest is about how Rajeswari tries to obstruct Meenakshi from consummating her marriage, tries to fulfill her own unfulfilled desires, and finally takes revenge on the trio. The Goddess finally tells in no uncertain terms, "In your last birth Raja was your husband. In this birth he is Meenakshi's, so you have no claim over him."

In the 'devotional films' of today, the storyline is the same, the incidents are repeated, and the artistes are chosen from the same grove. If one film has the actress playing 'Goddess', another has her playing the victim, and yet another, the tormentor. All quite confusing! No serious thought seems to have gone into the scripting. It is taken for granted that the audience would swallow anything if it has the label of a 'devotional' film. There is a couple of interesting computer graphics. But graphics can do only that much, when the screenplay is so weak.
