In Krita yuga Adi sesha the leader of the Nagas ( snakes ) did
severe penance and propitiated Mahavishnu . Pleased with his tapas
the Almighty appeared before him and declared that he will recline
on him –Adisesha here after. He accepted Adi sesha as his Sayanam.
Since Adi sesha worshipped Mahavishnu in Ashtanga Vidhana in agama
sastras this place was named after him as Nagapattinam.
In Treta Yuga Bhooma devi and in Dwapara Yuga Markendaya did penance
invoking the blessings of the lord.
Dhruvan ( King Uttanapadhan's son ) wanted the entire under his rule
and did severe penance in this place. He endured several
difficulties and emerged unscathed.
Finally Mahavishnu appeared before him resplendent in Chanku and
Charka mounted on a Garuda (mode of transport). Dhruvan was
attracted by the beatific vision of the lord that he did not feel
like asking anything. In fact he was ashamed of himself for
entertaining such mundane thoughts.( about the world being under his
rule).
On the other hand he asked for salvation so that he can be in the
company of God worshiping his Soundarya Roopam perennially.
The lord thus gave him salvation and remained here as Soundararajan.
Sara Pushkarini was created by Nagarajan. Saram means snake.
People who have bath in this holy tank are assured of a place in
Surya mandalam.
