Om Sri Skandasramam is built by one of the greatest seers of our
times, Sathguru Srimath Santhananda Swamigal who hails from the
Avadhoota tradition of saints. Enshrined in this temple are the
icons of rare deities including that of Kamala Siddhi Vinayakar,
Panchamukha Heramba Ganapathy, Dattatreya, Panchamukha Hanuman,
Sanieswarar, Ayyapan, Ashtadasabhuja Durga Parameswari, Srimath
Sathguru Santhananda Swamigal, Lord Sarabeswara (form of Shiva),
Goddess Prathiyankara, Goddess Bhuvaneshwari, Swaminathaswamy (Skanda),
and Sri Chakra Poorna Maha Meru all in a magnificent stature.
Now deities representing Saivism and Vaishnavism
are going to be consecrated on January 20, 2008. They are the Sri
Sudarshanachakathalwar, Sri Lakshmi Narasimhar and Sri Sahasralingam
(1008 Lingams), Sri Nandikeswarar. This holy place is also called
Krishnaranyakshetra.
Chennai Om Sri Skandasramam has installed a
gigantic panchaloka idol of Sri Maha Sudarshana Murthy (Chakarathazhwar)
with Lakshmi Narasimhar measuring about 18 feet. This is said to be
the tallest of its kind in the country. The speciality of this idol
is that it has Sri Sudarshana Murthy on the obverse and Sri Lakshmi
Narasimhar (along with his consort Sri Lakshmi) on the reverse. It
is generally Yoga Narasimhar who is found in the reverse.
Sudharshana Chakra is regarded as the primary weapon of Lord Vishnu.
It is even believed to be the incarnation of the Lord himself.
Offering prayers to Maha Sudharshana Murthy is
said to bestow health and wealth. It is also believed that Sri
Sudharshana Murthy protects his devotees from their adversaries. It
is significant to note that Sudharshana Homam was performed
continuously for 108 days at the instance of Santhananda Swamigal in
2001-2002. Around this sannidhi are installed the images of the
Dasavatharas or the 10 avatars of Lord Vishnu.
The
Sahasralingam, which is 1007 lingams carved in a huge gigantic
lingam which makes it a total of 1008 lingams, is being consecrated
in Chennai Om Sri Skandasramam. This stone image stands about 9 and
a 1/2 feet in height. The Shivalingam signifies or represents God
who is invisible but yet omnipresent, that is, the form who is
formless yet with form. The Lingam is mounted on a receptacle known
as the Avudaiyar. It is believed that the bottom of the pedestal
represents Lord Brahma, the octogonal middle represents Vishnu while
the upper portion represents Lord Shiva. The word `Ling' means
`symbol' and `the Linga' stands as `the Divine symbol of Lord
Shiva'.
Lord Nandikeswarar, the divine vehicle of Lord
Shiva, is depicted facing the sanctum and symbolises the yearning of
the human soul or the Jeevatma for realising its oneness with the
Paramatma or God.
It is believed that none should pass between Lord
Shiva and Lord Nandikeswara as they both have to merge into one. It
is also believed that devotees should have a darshan of the Lingam
through the two horns of Lord Nandikeswara, that is to see Lord
Shiva in the various jivas. Hence, Nandi or Jiva and Eshwara or Lord
Shiva are one and become Nandikeswara.
In the Chennai Om Sri Skandasramam the 5 feet
Lord Nandikeswarar will be installed.
