Tamil poet and DMK MP, Kanimozhi, the moving spirit behind
Chennai Sangamam, a festival of Tamil folk arts, theatre and
music, which had a successful launch in February 2007, says the
festival is likely to be held in other parts of Tamil Nadu too.
Kanimozhi, in an exclusive intervew to Chennaionline, said
several cultural organisations in other parts of the state
wanted a similar festival to be held in their districts with a
view to spread awareness about Tamil culture and fine arts.
"Chennai Sangamam seems to have inspired cultural organisations
in other parts of the state. They want similar festivals in
their areas too. We in Tamil Maiyam feel the concept could be
taken to other parts of Tamil Nadu as well."
'"It could happen that locally some
organisations could hold such festivals and we may not be
involved in the organisation. However, the model could be
replicated elsewhere," she pointed out.
So, will we see a Tamil Nadu Sangamam and not
just a Chennai Sangamam? That was possible, Kanimozhi said.
However, there was the question of logistics. It may be easier
for people in the districts to hold similar festivals in their
own areas. The important thing is that the concept has gained
ground and an interest has been created in Tamil theatre and
folk arts, she pointed out.
On whether Chennai Sangamam would be held as
part of Pongal festivities next year, Kanimozhi said it could
not be done in January this year for want of time. However, next
year the idea was to hold it as part of a larger Pongal
festival.
