An auspicious start to New Year Events

Sri Sumukhi Rajasekharan Memorial Foundation conducted the fourth 'Bala Vidhwan Bhavani' on Monday, January 1, 2008, from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m.

Children and elders, including the members of the foundation, dressed up in south Indian traditional attire, participated in large numbers by enthusiastically singing bhajans, Tiruppavai, Tiruvempavai and namavalis led by Nalini Ramprasad.

Little girls and boys and mothers also performed kolattam around the four mada streets of Kapaleeswarar Temple. Venn pongal as prasadam was distributed to one and all at the end.

According to The Mylapore Trio, S Amarnath, S Surendranath and S Aparna, "Margazhi procession with bhakti and chillness was a unique and a divine experience for the younger generation. We not only followed the footsteps of the musical legends, but also retraced their path on the four mada streets of Mylapore in order to perpetuate their memory... a thrilling experience."

Some of the senior citizens and parents said it was a good start to the New Year and were happy the auspicious beginning, perpetuating age-old tradition, had involved children.

An octogenarian commented, “I used to know a person by name Jalandirai (a Mylaporean who lived many decades ago) who used to conduct Margazhi procession early morning with a large number of children singing and dancing on the Mada streets of Mylapore. After several decades, I am very thrilled and happy to see these children doing the same. Bless them."

The Mylapore Trio's curiosity was triggered and now they want to know if anybody else has any info on this Jalandirai. "They can contact the foundation with the info," say The Mylapore Trio.
